The technology is based on the osmosis process. Simply, the power plant has two tanks, one is filled with salt water and the other one is filled with fresh water. There is a turbine in the tank with fresh water, which is moved by rising water. The tanks are connected with the semi-permeable membrane. Due to osmosis, the salt concentration in the two vessels should be the same level. It makes molecules move from the tank with the salt water through the membrane to the tank with fresh water. Rising water can move a turbine to run a generator. But there is only one problem: the process of generating electricity has been known for a long time and the amount of energy produced with the help of it is very low. But a group of researchers from Switzerland and the United States have found the way to increase generated output energy by several times.

The new type of membrane is the main component in the invention, which allows achieving an increased energy output. Salt and clean water are in the same tank, separated by a semi-permeable ultra-thin membrane. Only positive ions can pass through the membrane. An electrode connects to the membrane. When positive ions squeeze through the membrane, their electrons transfer to the electrode, producing a current.

 The advantage of the technology is that these ‘gates’ for ions can be numerous in the same membrane and, as the developers say, the membrane with the area of 1 square meter can generate up to 1,000 kilowatts of power, which is enough to power homes.
