Number of Bitcoin Unlimited nodes suddenly drops

The total of Bitcoin Unlimited nodes online has plummeted while the number of nodes upgraded to support SegWit reaches 420.

According to NodeCounter at press time, the total number of available nodes running BU has recovered to around 360. Earlier today, the number of BU nodes unexpectedly fell down by 65%, from 494 to 171. While the exact reason of this is still unknown, some Reddit users suggest this drastic decrease is the result of a new programme code error related to a memory bug. Others believe that, although caused by a bug, it may be a targeted attack on BU nodes.

“Just checked my syslog : bitcoin-msghand invoked oom-killer: gfpmask=0x24280ca(GFP_HIGHUSER_MOVABLE|_GFP_ZERO), order=0, oom_score_adj=0. Memory related indeed,” a user wrote.

Meanwhile, the Bitcoin Core and its SegWit solution draw more supporters among the bitcoin community after the official release of the new Bitcoin Core version 0.14.1 last weekend. One of the key improvements concerns the client’s memory usage allowing to fasten node access and transaction validation. For miners, the latest version offers support of non-SegWit clients even after activation, which would allow them to function correctly in the upgraded network.

The user-activated-soft-fork (UASF) and BIP148 have been also updated to Core 0.14.1. The improvement proposal 148, which contains mandatory SegWit activation, was released on 12 March by an anonymous developer under the alias shaolinfry. It is aimed not at miners but at nodes forcing them to upgrade to SegWit. The UASF of BIP148 might be deployed as early as 1 August unless the consensus on SegWit activation is reached earlier.

According to uasf.saltylemon.org, the total number of nodes upgraded to BIP148 exceeds 420.

Still, over the last two weeks, the share of BU has been higher than that of SegWit, as BTC.com shows. Within the last 2,016 blocks, it is 39.48%, comparing to SegWit’s 32.14% of the total number of mined blocks.
