WikiLeaks runs out of money

WikiLeaks website stopped publishing American diplomatic correspondence. It was reported by Agence France-Pressewith the reference to the statement of the website’s management.

According to the statement, the decision was made due to lack of funding, which had been provoked by the largest payment systems that had previously refused to accept donations for WikiLeaks.

The document said that WikiLeaks would have to focus on the problems of survival and energetic fund-raising activities. The website’s management called actions of payment systems, including Visa, MasterCard and PayPal, a ‘blockade’.

According to estimates of WikiLeaks published on the project’s microblog on Twitter, the website received from €40 to 50 million less as a result of the actions of payment companies. At the same time, the website’s activity costed $3,5 million per year.

WikiLeaks has become famous after the publication of secret documents on military campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan. The project on disclosure of material of the US State Department and American embassies around the world was launched in 2010.

The website’s activity was condemned by many countries. It was reported that PayPal had refused to accept donations for WikiLeaks at the request of the State Department. Representatives of Visa and MasterCard stated that they were not subjected to any pressure.

Earlier, the founder of WikiLeaks Julian Assange warned that the website could be closed due to lack of funding. In January 2011, he stated that he had a new large-scale leak for that scenario.
